Wagering at a racetrack is number three on the lest of legalized gambling today. As far as revenue generators go, casinos and lotteries are still holding the number one and two spots. As racetrack gamblers slowly shifted over to the entertainment the casinos offered, those who operated the racetracks decided that if they were to survive, they needed to get into the casinos somehow.
A gambling machine called Instant Racing was introduced in the late 1990′s. On this machine, players could bet on races within the casino and this type of betting brought in 5.8 million in 2004. Video poker terminals as well as slot machines where then showing up at veteran racetracks and some thought this introduction compromised the sport of track racing.
The name Racino was then born as a crossbreed name for the typical tracks. Racino began in a domino effect similar to the casino boom of the 1990s. To keep citizens and their money from jumping states, legislation was passed in ten states. These communities and their lawmakers were divided as to the economic, social and moral impact the new casinos introduced. They feared crime and decay would come along with the new casinos.
