On June 5, 2010 the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes will take place. The very first Belmont race that was run in the US was not the famous stakes we know today and it arrived from Franklin Ohio back in 1853. It was August Belmont, who the race was named after, a financier known in New York’s society.
He was known back then for horse racing and his name is connected with the history of the Kentucky Derby. The Belmont is the oldest of the event called the Triple Crown as the Belmont was introduced six years before the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby by eight years.
The very first race was run on a Thursday, of all days, at Jerome Park in 1867. The entry fee was $200 back then and in the North America, it is the fourth oldest race overall. In 1890, the race moved from Jerome Park to Morris Park and stayed there until 1905 when the Belmont Park was opened. The post parade that is known today had its first showing in 1880, before that date the horse were taken from their stall to the post.
